Hello and welcome to Wax and Wane
I’m Becky Gorton, a fully accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Supervisor. CBT is an evidence based therapeutic approach approved and recommended by the National Institute for Healthcare and Excellence (NICE) for depression, anxiety, panic, post traumatic stress, obsessive compulsive symptoms and specific phobias. Over the years it has been adapted for a range of other conditions including insomnia.
It has recently been recommended by NICE (2024) as a treatment option for anxiety and depressed mood experienced by women during the menopause transition and post menopause, that does not meet the threshold for clinical depression. CBT can particularly help when this occurs alongside vasomotor symptoms (like hot flushes, night sweats, chills or palpitations), sleep problems or insomnia.
CBT for menopausal symptoms can be offered as an alternative to or alongside other treatments including Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
Following an initial assessment, sessions are collaborative, working towards a shared understanding and psychological formulation regarding your difficulties and identified goals with individualised treatment plans.
